Scripture Study
“Among all these were 700 chosen men who were left-handed; every one could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.” — Judges 20:16
An Unusual Detail in Scripture
I was reading through Judges recently and came across verse 16 of chapter 20. I know I’ve said this before about other passages, but even though I’ve read this verse in the past, it hit me in a totally fresh way this time.
First, consider the sheer number: 700 left-handed men. Off the top of my head, I can only think of a couple of left-handed people I personally know in my family. Left-handedness simply isn’t as common, so having a concentrated group of 700 left-handed men who were all elite stone slingers is striking.
What makes it even more unique is that in ancient Middle Eastern culture, left-handedness was often viewed as unusual, awkward, or even a physical disadvantage.
Tactical Advantage and Unmatched Precision
Digging a little deeper into the historical context of this verse reveals something fascinating: a group of left-handed stone slingers was actually a major tactical advantage on the battlefield.
Most soldiers trained to block and shield against right-handed attacks. When facing left-handed slingers, the stones would arrive from an unexpected angle, slowing down the enemy’s reaction time and breaching their defense strategy. What looked like a physical defect in daily life became a surprise weapon in battle.
Then there is the sheer level of precision described: every one could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.
Think about the countless hours of practice, discipline, and training required to become that accurate. That wasn’t a skill acquired overnight—it took years of persistent work.
God Prepares What the World Overlooks
God has a purpose behind every detail. He raised up 700 left-handed, highly skilled warriors for a specific time and task—men who might otherwise have been overlooked or disregarded because of a perceived weakness.
God flipped the script and turned their perceived limitation into a decisive advantage.
While Scripture doesn’t detail the backstory, God clearly laid it on someone’s heart to recruit, organize, and train this specialized unit. He was setting the pieces in place years before these men would ever be called into action.
What Are You Holding Back from God?
Is there something about yourself, your background, or your skill set that you think God can’t use? Is there a trait you’ve viewed as a handicap or an obstacle?
Remember that God built a formidable line of defense out of 700 men the world considered disadvantaged. He didn’t make a mistake when He made you, and He doesn’t waste any part of your story.
Have a great day in Christ,
Matt
