The Power of Practical Generosity
I was watching some videos online recently about people helping others. They gave them money, cars, bought them groceries—someone even gave a house to someone in need. There were many different circumstances surrounding those receiving the gifts: people suffering from cancer and unable to work, individuals living on the streets, or folks who had just gotten out of prison.
While part of me is skeptical about whether all of those online videos are completely genuine, many of them captured what felt like true reactions to real generosity. It was clear these people were hurting and in deep need of the break being provided. I’ll admit, I even teared up watching a few of them.
If I could have any superpower, it would be to have money automatically appear in my pocket whenever I came across a genuine need. I wouldn’t have to guess or deliberate—the exact amount needed would just be there, and I could give it, no questions asked.
There is such a great feeling in getting the chance to help someone. But the reality is that there are so many hurting people in this world. You could give back all day, every day for a whole year, and there would still be endless needs left at the end of it.
Looking Beyond the Temporary Fix
While it is incredible to give away money, cars, and homes, those things are ultimately temporary fixes.
If I took a family off the street today and handed them a brand-new home and ten million dollars, did I truly give them what they need most? I’m sure they wouldn’t complain, and it would definitely alter their daily circumstances. But what if they still don’t know Jesus?
If we give someone a million dollars but fail to point them to Christ, have we truly helped them for the long haul?
The Greatest Gift You Can Offer
If God puts someone in your path and you have the ability to help meet their immediate physical needs, you absolutely should do it. But don’t ever forget: if Jesus is your Lord and Savior, you possess something far more valuable than anything this world could ever offer.
You have the message that can change someone’s eternal destiny. You might even call that a real superpower.
How can we possibly keep that to ourselves?
