Mold in the Attic: Exposing the Setups That Lead Us Astray

Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil. Avoid it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on. Proverbs 4:14-15 (ESV)

For mold to grow, you need three key ingredients: darkness, moisture, and heat. I’m no scientist or mold expert, but I had to learn this the hard way when we recently found what we believe is mold growing in our attic. The space is pitch black, extremely hot, and to top it off, our bathroom exhaust fan is venting warm, moist air directly into the attic instead of outside. It is a textbook environment for mold to thrive.

When it comes to temptation, we often do the exact same thing: we make provision for the flesh (Romans 13:14). We inadvertently build the perfect environment for sin to take root:

• You’re driving home alone, stressed, and pull straight into the drive-thru.
  
  
• You’re alone on your laptop late at night, feeling disconnected, and a risky prompt appears.
  
  
• You’re back at an old hangout spot with old buddies, expecting a different outcome.

A Way Forward

Fixing a mold problem requires bringing in light, exposing the hidden space, and rerouting the airflow so moisture can’t collect. Dealing with sin requires the exact same biblical strategy:

1. Bring it into the Light: Darkness is where mold and sin flourish. Confess your struggles to God and trusted brothers who can hold you accountable (1 John 1:7).

2. Reroute the Path: Change your habits and physical environment. Put filters on your computer, take a different route home, or step back from places that trigger old patterns.

3. Clothe Yourself in Christ: You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through life. Replace bad setups with daily prayer, Scripture, and fellowship.

God doesn’t just call us to resist sin in the heat of the moment—He gives us the wisdom to avoid the setup altogether, and the grace to start fresh today.
