But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. – Galatians 1:8
Galatians 1:8 contains one of the strongest warnings in all of scripture. Paul points out that even if an angel from heaven should preach a false gospel, that he should be accursed. As I read that it takes the level of seriousness about preaching a false gospel up a notch in my mind. No one gets a free pass. Preaching a false gospel is a serious mistake.
To be accursed is a serious punishment for preaching a false gospel. The Greek word translated “accursed” is anathema, referring to someone devoted to destruction and under God’s judgment. Paul’s warning shows just how serious it is to distort the gospel.
To be cut off from Christ for eternity is not something to take lightly.
The Galatians were changing the gospel message from a doctrine of grace to a doctrine of works. They were adding requirements like circumcision and observance of the Jewish law. They were making salvation depend on more than just faith in Christ.
The gospel is a simple message that has great power. It doesn’t take any specialized training to understand or to share with others.
Some people hesitate to share the gospel in fear that they do not know enough but God does not say to share the gospel when you know enough. He simply says to go share the gospel. He made it simple for a reason.
If you faithfully proclaim the true gospel, you don’t have to fear Paul’s warning about preaching a false gospel. Simply share the message of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. It’s all about Christ and what He did for us, not what we can do for Him.
Someone you meet today needs to hear the gospel. Pray and ask God to make you aware of who that is and ask Him to give you the courage to speak boldly the simple message of the gospel.
Have a great day in Christ
Matt
