Quietly Build: Why the Greatest Work in God’s Kingdom Happens in Silence

Scripture Study

When the house was built, it was with stone prepared at the quarry, so that neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron was heard in the house while it was being built. – 1 Kings 6:7

When I read 1 Kings 6:7, it immediately spoke to me about the deep reverence King Solomon had for God while building the temple.

Before construction even began, Solomon already considered the site a sacred space. Shaping the stones off-site might have made them easier to transport, but what if a stone was cut wrong and didn’t fit? Did they have to haul it all the way back to the quarry? It certainly would have been more convenient to keep tools at the building site.

Yet Solomon was far more concerned with silence as an act of worship toward God than with the convenience of the workers.

Reading this made me pause and ask myself: Do I have that much reverence for God in how I live and serve?

Kingdom Work in a Noisy World

While studying this verse, I came across a insightful statement by commentator David Guzik:

“Often the greatest work in the kingdom of God happens quietly.”

In our modern social media culture, we are constantly taught to shout about everything we do. People even joke, “If it isn’t on social media, it didn’t happen.”

However, Jesus gives us a very different standard in Matthew 6:3:

“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”

We are also reminded in 1 Peter 5:5–6 that “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble,” and that we should “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.”

For His Glory, Not Ours

Solomon didn’t build the temple for human applause or his own status. He built it quietly, purely as an offering to God.

We are called to follow that same pattern. The work we do, the sacrifices we make, and the faith we live out should ultimately be for His glory—not our own recognition.

Have a great day in Christ,

Matt
