29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” – Matthew 14:29-31
Faith can be a crazy thing. I had a friend tell me one time that God wanted to do big things with my life, but that I needed to remember that what is big in God’s eyes isn’t necessarily big in man’s eyes. I always thought of that as it might be insignificant to me and others around me but that it would be important to God. Regardless of what I thought, I still needed to be faithful to do what He was asking because it would be important to God.
Lately I have been realizing that big or small in man’s eyes, it’s all a small thing to God. He is constantly doing things in the background waiting for you to trust Him and take the next step that He is asking you to take. The steps may get bigger and bigger, but if you keep putting your faith in Him, He eventually leads you to a giant leap that only feels like a small step.
The steps get bigger but smaller at the same time.
He controls it all, He owns it all, and it is nothing for Him to equip and provide you with whatever you need. It’s all small to God. When everything falls into place, you might be thinking “wow, that is amazing!” While it’s just another piece of God’s puzzle. It may be small to God, but He still knows how big it is to you and it brings Him great joy to do it for you.
Why You Need to Get Out of the Boat
I want to point to the verses at the top. A friend of mine reminded me of them last night. Peter had the faith to walk on water, something that only he and Jesus can claim, but he had to get out of the boat first.
I don’t know where you are in your faith walk right now, but one day God wants you to have the faith to walk on water. That might mean taking short seemingly insignificant steps now, but if you keep stepping, He will get you to the big steps that you will take effortlessly. Many steps along the way will be a struggle, but it’s all a part of the growth. But with each step remember, if you want to walk on water, you have to get out of the boat.
