He did evil because he had not set his heart on seeking the Lord. – 2 Chronicles 12:14
Reading through the Old Testament, the phrase “He did evil in the sight of the Lord”—or something similar—appears quite often. It is used repeatedly to summarize the reigns of the kings of Israel and Judah. The king’s name is introduced, and then this heavy judgment follows right after.
That is definitely not the legacy any of us want associated with our names.
The Cause Behind the Decline
The verse above in 2 Chronicles specifically describes King Rehoboam. What makes this verse stand out is that it goes beyond describing his actions—it exposes the root cause: he failed to set his heart on seeking the Lord.
This lack of intentionality didn’t just lead to his own personal downfall; it triggered a widespread spiritual decline with severe consequences for the entire nation of Israel.
Spiritual decline can happen far faster than we realize. If you aren’t actively seeking God, it’s easy to drift in the wrong direction. Personal ambition and worldly success carry a strong pull when we aren’t deeply grounded in Christ—it’s simply our sinful nature responding to the pattern of the world.

What would the people closest to you say your life prioritizes?
Your daily priorities directly reveal where your heart is anchored. Do they show a life intent on seeking the Lord, or do they reflect a pursuit of personal ambition and worldly comfort?
Only one of those paths leads to true life. Consciously choosing to seek God in every corner of your life is what protects you from the quiet drift toward destruction.
