Panic or Comfort? What Knowing God Is Always Present Changes

Scripture Study

7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! – Psalm 139:7-8

Yesterday was a busy day for me. One of those days I had things scheduled back-to-back and for the most part everything was falling in line. Until one of the last things of the day.

I was traveling on the highway to meet someone for my next appointment, and I was a little behind. Instead of taking my time, which would not have been a problem, I started driving a little over the speed limit. I was in a group of cars, and I was still not keeping up with everyone else even with speeding.

Then all of a sudden everyone started to slow down. Being in the middle of everyone, it caused me to slow down as well. As I came around the bend, I understood why everyone was braking so fast. There was a police car sitting in the middle of the highway.

The Flashing Lights Effect

It’s interesting what happens when you see a police car and you are driving over the speed limit. A feeling of panic comes over your body as you hit the brakes and start to say, “I hope he doesn’t pull me over.” The presence of the police changes your actions in an instant.

There were a few thoughts as I continued the rest of my drive at the speed limit:

  1. I was thankful I didn’t get pulled over even though I deserved it.

  2. Just because everyone else was speeding didn’t make it right for me to do it.

  3. I thought about the police like the presence of God in my life. The police can only be in certain spots on the road, but I am always in God’s presence.

So why do I sometimes live my life like He is not there?

Panic or Peace?

It’s not just with sin. I should always be aware of God’s presence to help me stay on the right track. I should know that He is always aware of my actions—I can’t get away with anything.

But what about the times when I let fear take over? Why do I forget God is right there in those times as well? He is not a God who just sits up there waiting to punish me when I sin, but He is also a loving Father who wants to carry me through the tough and fearful times.

Who is God to you? Does His presence bring you panic or comfort?

Have a great day in Christ,

Matt
